2013 . 2014

6 min read
Hello Everybody!

How are your holidays, and seasons happening? Respectively well, I hope! Please tell me! What's the best part of your holidays? What are you looking forward to in 2014?

On this end, things have been rather quiet. I am gearing up for a new chapter in my photographers life, and in my personal life. As of December, I have cut off most of my TF sessions, and have decided to focus on my career, rather than my book. As a photographer, I didn't quite understand this thought until rather recently. I continually asked myself, "When do I stop being the new graduate? The baby in the industry, if you will".

Some of you know, I have only been a graduated student photographer for about a year. And since then, it's been an up and down year of emotions both good and bad, confusion, and then the ultimate realization that everything would indeed be alright. You just need to take everything one single step at a time.

2013 brought a trio of published works; It brought about a sense of accomplishment, and joy in my work. One of my big goals for 2013 was to accumulate a bit of work that would be considered ready for publishing.

I had my first photographic road trip. Not far, mind, but I had a solid two days of shooting with an amazing team on Prince Edward Island. I probably added at least 200 kilometres on the car, a billion mosquito bites, and about 13 hours of accumulative shooting to my tally afterwards, and it was entirely worth it. I met a team of amazing women who held up even under the most stressful and hectic circumstances, and had the opportunity to work with a handful of gorgeous ladies, and pony!

This year marked my first year as a media photographer; with media passes to various fashionable events around the City. Turbine, Atlantic Fashion Week, and the Everything to do with Sex Show (Which I have recently been invited back to for the third year in a row as part of the media team!)  as well as various other shows in Halifax.

I ventured up to New Brunswick (And anyone who knows me, knows that I live under a rock!) to become a part of their industry. I had the opportunity to meet, chat, and get to know several new people, as well as a good friend of mine from #iPhotograph , CRWithers (Hurry up and come back to the Maritimes already!) ! I keep hoping to get back up and visit several folks again in the coming year, if not to shoot with as well!

But mostly?

I realized just how lucky I am to have the contacts, friends, and acquaintances I have within the Halifax Industry. The wide net of awesome folks knows no bounds, and I am extremely thankful for everyone I've worked with, and had the pleasure to shoot. There are so many wonderful people in the city, and surrounding provinces, and it's quite amazing to see so much creativity come together. I hope to see, and experience the artistic community and everything it has to offer in 2014.

Hello everyone;

I figured an update was due. Since the last time I've written, I've shot two of the Zodiac series, and still have one planned at this point in time. Currently, I have 4/12 done, at least 1 ready to go. Can't wait to start shooting the rest.

This last few months however, I've been rebranding, and rebuilding myself. ravynsphotography.com was rebuilt from scratch, for which I owe a good friend of mine for the next few lifetimes; my business cards were redesigned, and I've started thinking about where I want to go, and how I want to accomplish it. Of course, there's a lot I still don't know-- the stuff they really don't teach you in school. But, one step at a time, we're getting there.
Actually, I've started reading a new book that's explaining the process in a way that I can understand. It both asks me, and answers the questions it asks in a way to make the reader understand. And to get this book I had to go all over the HRM, and back, and then finally give up and order it from Chapters/Indigo to get it. Definitely recommend it; it's the Photographers Market 2013.

I also have some big news. But until it actually happens, I don't want to jinx it. So keep your fingers crossed!

I've come to that point in the beginning of my photographic career, where I'm standing at a crossroads. On one side stands school debt (Holy mountainous batman), shooting at random, and a slowly built port. On the other side stands a massive personal problem that's slowly hindering my ability to shoot.

This crossroads isn't the best place to be, but if I can hold on a little longer, hopefully something will come of it.

This Months Ideas!

:bulletblack: Taurus -- Zodiac -- Everything but the date hashed out.
:bulletblack: Headshots with a model.
:bulletblack: Pisces -- Zodiac -- Everything but the date hashed out.
:bulletblack: Event -- Downtown Halifax -- Leather ?

What do YOU have on the go this month as a photographer, model, MUA, hair, or wardrobe? What are your goals for this month?

Hey folks! It's nearing the end of February, heading into March, and that means a new batch of news, stories, and other such things to share!

What's going on, you might ask?

I mentioned earlier last month, that I was working on a project for the year, and creating a calendar towards the end of the year, with the images gathered for it. I've been particularly secretive about it, but now that I've released the first few images from the first shoot, I feel most comfortable releasing the rest of the information.

2013 ZODIAC CALENDAR

Based on the 12 symbols of the zodiac (think astrology), my plan is to build a themed high fashion calendar with each month reflected through a zodiac symbol, and it's corresponding birthstone.

IE: January's symbol was Capricorn, and it had a birthstone of Garnet.

Our plan was to bring the actual "goat" image of capricorn to the shoot somehow-- quite the odd thing to plan for. So, we decided to actually form goat-horns using a quite crazy hairstyle. A very hilarious trip to the dollar store came of it too, to find the materials to actually build the horns (You don't quite think of how hard it might be to go about building them, until you actually HAVE to build them. Really.).

This was the end result;

Behind the Scenes with the Model, Note her hair

As you can see, horns. Built using bendable craft wire, craft duck-tape, and a ton of newspaper.

To any photographer wishing to do this: Be extremely careful selecting your wire. The last thing you want to do is accidentally scalp your model with sharp wire. Find a hairstylist who is open, creative, and not afraid to try new things though!

From there, we went with a gold domino-mask, overtop of some red contouring. Black lips, and eyes completed the overall image.

The Final Result? Pol_Cap by Ravyns-Photography

I had an awesome team for this; Polina, our lovely model; Nicole, an awesomely creative director, and MUA; Felicia, a wonderfully bubbly, creative hair stylist; and an awesome location for anyone to ever work in, Shadow House Studios, in Bayers Lake (NS).

What's on the go for March?

A steroids injection to my portfolio (or at least the beginnings of one ((NOT LITERALLY))). My goal by the end of this month is to have my business cards back; backstory, I moved, changed phone numbers, and they became obsolete really fast! My website back up; and at least 4 shoots happening for March, for Portfolio. If I can schedule more, awesome. But at least 4 have to happen.

And the scary thing is, one might actually be an editorial, if luck happens to play my way.

What's YOUR end of February, and month of March bringing about?

January News

Hello folks! It's January of 2013! A new year means new work, new ideas, and changes to both the business, and myself.

What's going on, you might ask?

The first down to business is the organization of this year. Each month, I have planned a shoot based loosely around two key concepts; the astrological sign of that month, and the birthstone of that month. So far, for January, I have at least 3/5 of my shoot down. I have a model, a superbly creative make-up artist, a wicked hairstylist, and some awesome ideas to work with. I've never actually worked alongside this new model, as well as the stylist, so it'll definitely be an experience for all of us.

I have this idea for January, that I've had squiggling around in my head for years-- it's been the basis of numerous art projects, a WoW character, and now a portfolio piece. I'm very excited. And I actually have to track down someone I've known for years to thank them for inspiring this. Definitely never would have happened without that one person.

What else is going on for January / February?

My very FIRST advertisement!

I can't give out very many details at the moment, but I'm very super-excited for the coming event. We (the current team of two) are currently planning the shots, right down to the model(s)(male and female!), clothing (we have samples!), location, and date.

Stay tuned for many more details! They will be released very shortly!
